SES Tutoring
Youths participating in the SES tutoring programIn 2005, the State of California approved Hope Through Housing as a Supplemental Education Services (SES) providers. Our SES program uses the Voyager Expanded Learning curriculum proven to increase achievement and test scores. All services are free to families. Hope contracts with school districts that pay for service to eligible students.

Math and reading sessions last one hour and are offered twice per week after school. On average, SES students participate 36 hours during the school year, although hours vary by district.

  • A credentialed teacher meets with students and parents to assess reading and math needs.

  • Students are placed in small groups based on ability. Group size is limited to five or fewer.

  • Teachers use fun, engaging curricula that appeals to youth.

  • Students who need more support work one-on-one with a teacher.

  • Students’ work is reviewed and success is celebrated.

Voyager

The Voyager curriculum consists of Voyager Passport for reading and Vmath for math. Both are based on California standards. Independent research shows that both Voyager programs produce significant academic gains. These findings are supported by our own study of the Passport program. In just 10 weeks, students read more quickly and understood more of what they read. Reading fluency increased by 156 percent. Reading comprehension increased by an average of 47 percent.
